Personal Statement for University:

I am applying to a course in concept art because I have always been fascinated with games and how they're created. I have always been more interested in the practical creation of games over the writing and business side of it. I also want to expand my knowledge in drawing, especially people and landscapes, and would like to learn more about drawing both on paper and digitally. The courses I am applying for have a main focus on drawing, during this course I am hoping to develop my skills. I have had experience with many Adobe software packages, especially Photoshop, using them to create different media productions ranging from video editing to animation. I have also used Maya to create 3D characters and objects as well as animations. I believe I would be suitable for a course on concept art or games design because I am a creative person and I enjoy drawing. I have been interested in creative digital media for a long time and hope to work in the industry one day. For the past few years I have been developing my drawing skills, alternating between both digital drawing on my Wacom tablet and drawing with pencils. I am currently studying a Media course at Long Road Sixth Form college in Cambridge. Throughout the two years I have learnt to 3D model (Basics in Maya), animate (2D & 3D), edit photos, develop concept art and produce and edit videos. As well as media, I am also taking a course in photography. Photography has really helped with my knowledge of cameras and how to use different functions as well as framing and positioning different shots and subjects. I am involved in a voluntary extra-curricular student film club; my role in this is lead advertiser and camera man. For the advertising I have to use Photoshop and Illustrator to help create eye-catching posters to put up around the college. I joined the club when approached by a fellow student who knew of my previous poster designs and my Photoshop abilities. I offered to be a camera man for the club as I have had experience helping another student film their Film Studies coursework and also have had previous knowledge working with cameras. I have volunteered for a number of years at a youth motorbike charity, helping teenagers learn to ride bikes safely off road to get them prepared for learning to ride on road. I have had to supervise groups of young people with behaviour and learning difficulties. This whole experience has helped teach me to be patient and have basic knowledge in health and safety. Part of the project included taking part in team building exercises such as caving; high ropes, canoeing, archery, camping and other outdoor activities. I have been involved with other voluntary work including helping out at an after school club for students who have been bullied or are in need of extra support. I have also volunteered at a small riding stables helping out with manual tasks as well as assisting club days for younger children. I'm a fairly quiet person with a small close friendship group. In my spare time I enjoy playing video games and talking with my friends. I regularly go to the gym as well as look after two horses. After University I would like to work in the games industry as a concept artist. The course would be useful to help better my knowledge and abilities needed for this role. I have researched into the gaming industry as well as visited a games company. These experiences have helped better my knowledge into the industry and helped confirm that I would enjoy working in that field.
